B

Beam Clamp

A type of forged or fabricated clamp that is used to attach rod hangers to beams by clamping onto the load flange.

Bolted

The piping support assembly clamped together using bolts rather than band straps.

Bracket

Cantilevered member, with or without a kneebrace, designed to withstand a gravity load and/or horizontal forces.

C

Channel

A structural steel component which is C-shaped in cross section.

D

Design check

Evaluation of the design to determine whether it conforms with the design brief and can be expected to provide a safe engineered solution..

Design Engineer

A design engineer is a general term that covers multiple engineering disciplines including electrical, mechanical, civil, and structural /building/architectural

Duct

Ducts are used in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) to deliver and remove air including supply air, return air, and exhaust air.

E

Eurocodes

European standards and technical rules specifying how structural design should be conducted.

F

Factor of Safety

A figure by which the design strength of a structure is reduced (or the design load increased) in order to ensure the structure has a reserve of strength against failure or collapse. This is intended to cater for variations in material strength or uncertainties in determining the design load.

Fixperience Install-Fix

Fixperience Install-Fix is a software performing analysis of Fischer applications.

Force

Fundamental to engineering science, an influence that causes a body to change its speed, direction or shape. Structures are usually intended to resist movement, so the effect of the force is to change the shape of the structure, causing deflection. The stiffness of the structure determines the amount of deflection for a given force.

H

Hanger

A type of pipe support consisting of a clamp in which the piping system is upheld from an upper portion rather than from the base. This type of pipe support is available with or without insulation.

Hanger Rod

Round steel bar normally threaded used to connect other components, to make up a Pipe Hanger Assembly.

Hanger Rods

A vertical pipe support that incorporates a rod. It may be a rigid, variable spring or constant support hanger. The rod hanger provides support in the vertical direction and allows limited motion in the horizontal direction.

Heavy Bracket

A Bracket used for the support of heavy loads.

Hot Dip Galvanizing

A process of protecting metallic surfaces from corrosion or rust by dipping the materials for a certain period in boiling chemicals.

HVAC

HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) is the technology of indoor and vehicular environmental comfort. Its goal is to provide thermal comfort and acceptable indoor air quality.

HVAC Systems

A distribution system that is used for cooling or heating the building or facility.

I

Imposed Load

The load imparted to a structure by the objects that it supports, such as people, furniture, vehicles and so on. Other imposed loads are caused by snow on roofs, for example.

L

Live Load

Another term for Imposed Load.

M

Mefa StatiCAL

Mefa StatiCAL is a software performing analysis of Mefa installation applications.

MEP

MEP stands for Mechanical Electrical Plumbing

Moment

A measure of force causing a turning effect due an offset distance between the line of action and reaction. This is used to assess problems of bending in beams, or overturning in structures such as retaining walls or dams. A moment is calculated by multiplying the force by the length of the “lever arm” perpendicular to the direction of the force, hence its unit: newton metres (Nm).

P

Pipe Clamp

A bolted Pipe Attachment which clamps around the pipe to connect the pipe to the remainder of a Pipe Hanger Assembly.

Pipe Hanger

A device which is suspended from a structure and is used to carry the piping load in tension.

Pipe Support

An assembly used to uphold a piping system at desired location.

Pipe supports and hangers

Pipe supports and hangers are devices which transfer the loads from the pipe or the structural attachment to the supporting structure or equipment. They include rod hangers, spring hangers, sway braces, turnbuckles, struts, anchors, saddles, rollers, brackets, and sliding supports. Structural attachments are elements that are welded, bolted, or clamped to the pipe, such as clips, lugs, clamps, clevises, and stops.

S

Sliding Support

A device providing support from beneath by offering no resistance, other than frictional, to horizontal movement.

Span

The distance between the centres of supports for a beam or truss. This is greater than the width of the opening but less than the length of the beam. Where spans are quoted in design calculations this should not be taken as the length of the beam.

Stability

The condition of a structure or a mass of material when it is able to support the applied stress for a long time without suffering any significant deformation or movement that is not reversed by the release of the stress.

Stress

Is the measure of internal force within a body, defined as the amount of force per unit area.

Structural engineer

Engineer who analyzes, designs, plans, and researches structural components and structural systems to achieve design goals and ensure the safety and comfort of users or occupants.

Strut3D

It is an application assisting the design process of the supporting installation systems.

Application allows for modification of dimension of channel as well as numer and location of supporting points for the optimal use of the system. It is also possible to model loads representing duct airs, cable trays or pipes by entering point or distributed loads.

The following systems are integrated and available at Strut3D: Alnor, Bonacci, Egli Fischer, Erico, Fischer, Fixeco, Flamco, Gia, Gripple, Groppalli, Ing, Lindab, Martigrap, Mefa, Mez, Müpro, Niczuk, Norm, Omec, Oter, Raccorfer, Samvaz, Sikla, Tyco, Unistrut, Walraven.

Application available at: www.strut3d.com

Tutorials

The list of articles explaining all functionalities of Strut3D.

U

Ultimate Limit State

(ULS) The condition in which the factored loads are compared with the capacity of the structure. The working loads are multiplied by factors so as to provide a margin of safety against failure, as opposed to the allowable stress method which reduces the calculated strength to compare with the working loads.

Unistrut
